The Boswell Brief: Tax Day

Op-Ed

Date: April 15, 2010
Location: Washington, DC
Issues: Taxes

Dear Fellow Iowan,

Every year Americans dread April 15th, better known as "Tax Day." While we all understand that in order for us to have roads, schools, and police and fire protection we must pay taxes, sometimes it is hard to see how much those basic needs and services cost.

However, over the last two years, the tax burden on middle class families has actually decreased thanks to tax breaks and credits implemented by my colleagues and I in Congress and President Obama.

The Making Work Pay Tax Credit benefited one million Iowans under the Recovery Act. Additionally, education tax credits like the Hope Credit benefited 78,000 Iowa families with their college expenses in 2007. These families have been able to access even larger tax credits like the American Opportunity Tax Credit. Through the first time homebuyer tax credit, 20,758 homebuyers in Iowa received money back on the purchase on their first home.

Sincerely,

Leonard L. Boswell
Member of Congress
